SUTRA NEPAL

SUTRA is an autonomous, artist-led creative group which formulated in September 2003 under registration with government of Nepal with a collective zeal to introduce the innovative art with activities such as art workshops, dialogues; artists exchange programme, and other art activities, which are rare and very new to Nepal. The Sutra began with an unofficial art workshop “Monsoon Harmony” in 2002 where nearly ten energetic artists from different genre come together to create installations and performance in the secluded forest of Tapoban. However the lack of seed money and problematic huddle in fundraising during the conflict period in Nepal detained Sutra from many wondrous art projects to come true.

With the bighearted financial support of Ford Foundation, and good help from our regional partner organizations, Sutra took some of the decisive steps in the Art Arena of Nepal. Sutra has become synonym as a promoter of cutting-edge art practices in Nepal and a platform for opportunities and artists' exchanges. Sutra, apart from its regular art activities, is now in process to establish a digital networking and personal section of artists on web making it accessible and serving it as an open forum. Sutra hopes to encourage this digital network as an unbiased connecting solution for anyone who would search for opportunities or vice versa.

A sixth workshop for amateurs was organized at Gallery Nine in Kathmandu. Besides these local art workshops, Sutra has also successfully organized two international art workshops "Nuga Mikha" in 2004 and international artists' workshop at Patan Durbar Square in 2006.
